My first work trip abroad was to Japan for Fuji Television in 1994. I had agreed to build this shrine for a crazy gameshow, but I hadn't yet figured out how to build a corbel, curved roof, or other details. To make matters worse, the producers insisted on moving it every day from studio to studio to accommodate filming, and we also had an earthquake. Several elements of the impossible came together. I also carried a nearly identical real shrine in the local fishing festival parade on real timbers in exactly the same way we had been moving the card shrine around the studios all week, which was kind of poetic.
